At this point I have no idea why I get surprised when SM releases music. But here I am, extremely (but pleasantly) surprised. The maturity, the nuance, the nostalgia. It all played a part. SM had been sitting in the New Jack Swing pocket for the better part of five years, and now they’ve expanded their reach to dip into some of R&B’s annals. Giving us that perfect intersection of when R&B and pop were lovers in the mid ’80s. Never mind the surprising vocal range of the group, something they had to grow into. While there are moments when the production seems a little flat, all things combined “Resonance Pt. 1” is a remarkable piece of pop music that I really wasn’t expecting.
