Whoever categorized this album as neo soul is either too young to know better or has a very narrow understanding of black music. There’s nothing "new" about this soul. Alex Harris created his “Frequency” EP in the same tradition of Sam Cooke, Bobby Womack and, most notably, Otis Redding. There aren’t many shades of the R&B, jazz or hip hop here that would provide the “neo” in neo soul. This is just straight-no-chaser, stone-cold soul from the depths of an aching spirit who needs some release. And I refuse to let people deny the existence of the genre in the current age.
